Trauma Therapy

Healing from Trauma

Trauma can change the way you experience yourself, your relationships, and the world around you. While some traumatic experiences are obvious, such as abuse, violence, accidents, or the loss of a loved one, others develop over time through chronic stress, neglect, emotional invalidation, or difficult relationships. Regardless of how it began, trauma can leave lasting patterns that continue long after the original experience has ended.

You may find yourself feeling anxious, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, constantly on edge, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. Many people understand logically that they are safe, yet their mind and body continue responding as though danger is still present. Trauma therapy provides an opportunity to better understand these patterns, reconnect with yourself, and create meaningful, lasting change.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma affects everyone differently because every nervous system responds differently. Some people develop symptoms immediately after a traumatic experience, while others may not recognize the effects until months or years later. Trauma is not simply about what happened to you. It is also about how those experiences continue to influence your emotions, relationships, beliefs, and physical responses today.

Common effects of trauma include:

  • Anxiety and panic
  • Depression or emotional numbness
  • Intrusive memories or nightmares
  • Hypervigilance or feeling constantly on edge
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Shame or harsh self criticism
  • Relationship challenges
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Difficulty feeling safe or connected
  • Physical tension and nervous system dysregulation
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Avoidance of reminders or difficult emotions

These responses are not signs of weakness. They are often adaptations your mind and body developed to help you survive overwhelming experiences.

My Approach to Trauma Therapy

I specialize in working with adolescents and adults recovering from trauma and other overwhelming life experiences. My approach is trauma informed and integrates Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EMDR, attachment theory, psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, and parts work.

I believe symptoms are not flaws to eliminate but adaptations that often developed for important reasons. Rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction, we will work together to understand how your experiences have shaped the way you think, feel, relate, and respond to the world. As therapy progresses, we will build new patterns that promote greater emotional regulation, resilience, flexibility, and connection.

Therapy always moves at a pace that feels collaborative, supportive, and respectful of your readiness. Healing does not require reliving every painful memory. Instead, our work focuses on helping your mind and nervous system develop new experiences of safety, connection, and choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if trauma therapy is right for me?

Trauma therapy may be helpful if past experiences continue to affect your emotions, relationships, sense of safety, or daily life. You do not need to have experienced a single catastrophic event to benefit from therapy. Many people seek trauma therapy because of childhood experiences, chronic stress, neglect, difficult relationships, or overwhelming life events that continue to influence how they think, feel, and relate to others.

What if I don't remember everything that happened?

Many people do not remember every detail of traumatic experiences, especially when trauma occurred during childhood or over a long period of time. Therapy does not require perfect memories. Our work focuses on understanding your current experiences, emotions, relationships, and nervous system responses rather than trying to reconstruct every detail of the past.

Do I have to talk about my trauma right away?

No. Therapy moves at a pace that feels collaborative and respectful of your readiness. Building safety, trust, and emotional regulation often comes before exploring difficult experiences in greater depth. You will never be pressured to discuss something before you feel ready.

Can trauma therapy help if my experiences happened years ago?

Yes. Trauma can continue affecting your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and nervous system long after the original experience has ended. Many clients begin trauma therapy years or even decades after their experiences and experience meaningful healing by understanding and changing the patterns that continue to affect their lives today.

What types of trauma do you treat?

I work with adolescents and adults experiencing the effects of childhood trauma, complex trauma, PTSD, attachment wounds, abuse, neglect, grief, accidents, medical trauma, and other overwhelming life experiences. Every person's experience is unique, so treatment is tailored to your individual history, goals, and needs.

Do you use EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy?

Yes. When appropriate, I integrate EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy alongside attachment theory, psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, and parts work. Rather than relying on a single therapeutic approach, I tailor treatment to your unique experiences, symptoms, and goals to support meaningful and lasting healing.

How do I know if we're a good fit?

Finding the right therapist is an important part of the healing process. I offer a complimentary consultation where we can discuss what brings you to therapy, answer any questions you may have, and determine whether my approach feels like the right fit for your needs and goals.
